INTERVIEW

What’s the idea behind the whole thing?
Oscar: For me, the main object is to explore the core of traditional jazz, blues and the genres that spring from it.

Toby: Yes, that sums it up pretty well - it has something to do with daring to be an anachronism.

Oscar: Through the years I’ve been listening for hours and hours to music that touches the heart - people talk about new and old music, but even if a song is sixty years old, it’s new to you if you hear it for the first time: that’s one thing that we try to keep in mind in our compositions.

Toby: And there is such a great number of old artists and songs that are sadly and unjustly forgotten.

Oscar: Take for instance the late great Erhard Bauschke - not easy to find on Spotify, that guy…

Toby: Exactly - our music is a kind of homage to these long lost phantoms. It’s about paying back a debt to those hard working people; missing links in the history of music.

What’s the secret behind KOR’s authenticity?
Toby: I’d like to return to that blurry thing I said about being an anachronism: the whole music scene of today tends to be pretty retrospective in many ways: Amy Winehouse brings back Tammi Terrell, a couple of years ago we had Squirrel Nut Zippers starting the neo-swing movement, not to mention the return of 80’s pop music: The Knife, for instance, reinvents some of the sounds of Howard Jones - there is nothing wrong with that: it shouldn’t come as news to the post modern mind that there is no such thing as a modern sound.

Oscar: Although there’s a difference to be under a certain influence, and having producers making plagiarisms out of thirty year old hits just for the money.

Toby: But it’s hard for me to decide wether we are authentic or not, still, I do know that we try to be as contemporary as we can be without tearing up the rare art of writing good songs.

How can you handle such an active 8-piece?
Oscar: It’s not easy, but with a firm hand and a gentle mind, you come a long way.

Toby: We try to uphold a homely atmosphere in the band, try to keep up a common goal… we see alot of eachother after work hours, we dress similar, share the same interests, etc.

Oscar: Isn’t that the Mansons’ you’re describing?

Toby: Yes, and it will probably end with a massacre…

Name some sources of inspiration!
Oscar: Jean Genet, Weldon Kees, Andrei Tarkovsky, Andrew Bird, The Benefit of Mr. Kite, Duke Ellington, King Oliver, the great failures in the early history of flying machines.

Toby: Michail Bulgakov, Phil Lynott, Cab Calloway, Bix Beiderbecke, Sol Bloom, the bicycle craze in the 1890’s, naked ladies in France and talking animals.

Die Jungs von MORNING BOY sind in diesen Tagen fleißig im Studio und produzieren ihr lang ersehntes Debütalbum. Damit wir teilhaben können, gibt es jede Woche einen kurzen Clip aus dem Studio als Blick hinter die Kulissen. Sänger Jörg durfte kurz mal Luft holen und lässt uns wissen…

“Der Winterschlaf ist vorbei. Bereits seit 2 Wochen sind wir nahezu pausenlos am werkeln, arrangieren, Saiten anschlagen und trommeln, und freuen uns mitteilen zu dürfen, dass wir die Bass- und Schlagzeugspuren für 15 Songs fertiggestellt haben. Dutzende Kannen Kaffee, unglaublich viel Pizza und Lasagne hats gedauert, doch der Aufwand hat sich gelohnt. Der Sound steht! Die kommende Woche ist den Gitarren gewidmet, danach kommen noch Synthies, Gesang und Chöre und tausend weitere Fuchtelein.”
